Carer's leave certificate, online

When someone in your household is unwell and you have to stay home with them, your employer can ask for evidence. A carer's leave certificate names you as the carer and covers the days you were away — and an AHPRA-registered Australian doctor can issue one through a telehealth consultation, without you leaving the person you're caring for.

Who can take carer's leave?

Under the Fair Work Act 2009, employees can use their paid personal/carer's leave to care for an immediate family member or a member of their household who has an illness, injury or unexpected emergency. Immediate family includes a spouse or de facto partner, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling — including those of your partner. Casual employees are entitled to unpaid carer's leave.

Your employer may ask for evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person. A medical certificate for the person you cared for, naming you as their carer, is the usual form.

What a Medibyte carer's certificate contains

  • • Your name as the carer and your relationship to the person you cared for
  • • The name of the person who was unwell
  • • The dates you were unable to attend work
  • • The name, signature and AHPRA registration number of the issuing doctor
  • • A unique verification code your employer can check on our verify page

In line with medical board guidance, no diagnosis is printed on the certificate — only that care was required.

How to request one

Start the request form and choose Carer's Leave at the first step. The questions then ask about the person you're caring for — their name, your relationship to them, when their symptoms started and what's going on. It takes about three minutes. $10 AUD covers a single day and $20 covers 2–5 days.

A doctor reviews your request, usually within a few hours during Australian business hours, and emails the signed PDF. If telehealth isn't appropriate for the situation, the request is declined and your payment is refunded in full.

When to see someone in person instead

Telehealth isn't right for everything. If the person you're caring for has chest pain, trouble breathing, severe or persistent vomiting, confusion, a stiff neck with fever, or is a young infant with a high fever, see a GP in person or go to your nearest emergency department. In an emergency call 000.
