Not for emergencies

Medibyte is not for urgent, life-threatening or severe symptoms (e.g. chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, suspected stroke). If you need urgent help, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.

1. About Medibyte and these terms

These terms ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Medibyte Telehealth Pty Ltd (ABN 50 700 913 613) ("Medibyte", "we", "us", "our"). They govern your use of medibyte.com.au and our online medical certificate service (the "Service").

You accept these Terms by ticking the consent box on the request form, by submitting a certificate request, or by otherwise using the Service. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

Our handling of personal and health information is governed by our Privacy Policy.

2. What we do — and what we don't

Medibyte is an online platform that connects you with independent, AHPRA-registered Australian medical practitioners ("Doctors") for the limited purpose of assessing your request and, where clinically appropriate, issuing a short-term medical certificate for work, study or carer's leave.

Medibyte itself is not a medical practice and does not provide medical advice. All clinical decisions are made by the reviewing Doctor in their independent professional judgement.

The Service does not cover, and we will not issue:

  • backdated medical certificates;
  • Centrelink medical certificates;
  • return-to-work or "fit for work" certificates;
  • clearance-to-travel or pre-employment certificates;
  • workers' compensation or insurance claim certificates;
  • prescriptions, repeats, or Schedule 8 medications;
  • referrals, pathology requests or imaging requests;
  • certificates for patients under 16 years of age;
  • certificates for chest pain, abdominal pain, or other potentially serious symptoms.

The Doctor may decline to issue a certificate at their sole clinical discretion. A decline is still a completed clinical review and the consultation fee remains payable.

3. Eligibility

To use the Service you must:

  • be at least 16 years of age;
  • be physically located in Australia at the time of the request;
  • have legal capacity to enter into these Terms; and
  • provide complete and truthful information about your identity and symptoms.

4. Your obligations and truthful information

You must answer every question on the request form honestly, accurately and completely. The reviewing Doctor relies on your answers — they cannot examine you in person. Providing false or misleading information to obtain a medical certificate may constitute fraud and may be reported to your employer, educational institution, or the relevant authorities.

You must not use the Service to obtain a certificate for someone else, to obtain backdated cover, or to misrepresent the nature or duration of any illness.

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials (and, for Doctors, your AHPRA-linked login) secure, and for notifying us promptly of any unauthorised access.

5. Fees, payments and refunds

The fee for a certificate request is shown on the request page before you pay. Payment is processed by Stripe via Stripe Checkout; we never see your full card number. Payment is taken at the time you submit your request.

Automatic full refund. If your certificate request does not meet requirements — for example, the reviewing Doctor declines to issue a certificate — you will receive a full refund of the amount you paid. Refunds are processed back to your original payment method automatically after the decline.

Discretionary full refund on request. If you are unsatisfied with your issued certificate — including the number of days covered, the wording, or for any other reason — please email pc.medibyte@gmail.com and we will issue a full refund. Once a refund is issued the certificate is considered withdrawn and should not be relied on.

Refunds typically appear on your statement within 5–10 business days, depending on your bank. Nothing in this clause limits any non-excludable rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law.

6. Certificates and verification

Where a certificate is issued, it will be delivered to the email address you provided, as a PDF that includes:

  • your full name and date of birth;
  • the reviewing Doctor's name and AHPRA registration number;
  • the dates the certificate covers;
  • a unique verification code and a verification URL.

To protect your privacy, the certificate does not state your specific diagnosis or symptoms — it simply confirms that, in the Doctor's opinion, you are unfit for work or study for the period covered.

By accepting these Terms you authorise Medibyte to operate a public verification page that confirms — to anyone holding your verification code — the certificate's authenticity and the dates it covers. No other personal or health information is disclosed via verification.

Certificates cannot be amended after issue. If details are wrong because the information you provided was wrong, you will need to submit a new request.

7. Records and your medical information

We retain records of your requests, issued certificates and associated clinical notes as required by Australian medical record-keeping obligations, and so that certificates remain verifiable in the future. The Doctor who reviews your request is treated as the treating practitioner for that consultation.

You consent to your request information being made available to AHPRA-registered Doctors on the Medibyte platform for the purpose of clinical review, quality assurance and audit.

Full detail of how we handle your information — including the third parties involved and your rights under the Australian Privacy Principles — is set out in our Privacy Policy.

8. Continuity of care

The Service is intended for one-off, short-term certificates. It is not a substitute for ongoing care from your regular GP. You should keep your usual GP informed of any consultations through Medibyte, and seek in-person review if your symptoms persist, worsen or change.

9. Third party providers

The Service relies on third-party providers including Stripe (payments), Supabase (database, authentication and storage) and Resend (email delivery). Your use of the Service is subject to the relevant terms of those providers where they apply to you.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss caused by, or connected with, the acts or omissions of those third parties.

10. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • use the Service for any unlawful, fraudulent or misleading purpose;
  • submit false symptoms, identity details or supporting information;
  • attempt to forge, alter, resell or tamper with a Medibyte certificate or verification code;
  • interfere with, scrape, reverse engineer, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service;
  • use the Service to harass, abuse or threaten any Doctor or staff member.

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, refuse to process a request, and notify relevant authorities (including AHPRA, employers or law enforcement) where we reasonably suspect misuse.

11. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts or modifies any consumer guarantee, right or remedy under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be lawfully excluded ("Consumer Law Rights").

Subject to your Consumer Law Rights, the Service is provided "as is" and we make no warranty that a certificate will be issued, that it will be accepted by any third party, or that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

Subject to your Consumer Law Rights, and to the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • our total aggregate liability to you arising from or in connection with these Terms or the Service is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim;
  • we are not liable for any indirect, consequential, special or incidental loss, loss of profit, loss of opportunity, loss of data, or loss arising from a third party's acceptance or rejection of a certificate; and
  • we are not liable for any loss caused by inaccurate or incomplete information you provided, or by your failure to follow medical advice.

12. Changes to the Service or these Terms

We may modify the Service or these Terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, give reasonable notice. Continued use of the Service after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Victoria, Australia. Each party submits to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria and the courts of appeal from them.
